Value of Training and Development
Value of Training and Development
We understand the value and significance of human resources in the workplace. It is entirely dependent on the talent and skill of the organization's current staff. Maintaining a skilled and talented workforce is a difficult task because it is a constant process that can be accomplished through training and development. Different authors define training in different ways.
The organization or an outside service provides the training. According to Henderson (2017), a collection of organized efforts on the part of an organization to improve job knowledge and abilities, or to change attitude and social behavior in order to achieve specific goals related to a given job or role.
Development is defined as "the constant enhancement of an individual's effectiveness in terms of their role or profession beyond the present task or work," according to (Ibid).
Armstrong (2001) defines training as "the systematic development of an individual's knowledge, abilities, and attitudes required to function well in a given job."
Training, according to Flippo (1984), is the process of improving an employee's knowledge and abilities in order for them to do a specific job.
According to Aswathapa (2000), team training entails developing the employees' aptitudes, skills, and talents to accomplish specified tasks. Training aids in the development of fresh talent as well as the upgrading of existing skill. Successful candidates will require training in order to properly fulfill their job.
The basic goal of training is to keep the organization's workers skilled, talented, and willing. This will benefit the company in a variety of ways, and the company's success is dependent on it. Aside from the core goal listed above, there are four additional goals to consider:
Objectives of Training and development
- Individual/Personal Goals: Everyone has their own set of goals and ambitions. This will assist them in achieving their own objectives, and the organization will benefit as a result.
- Firm/Organization Goals: Every company has its own vision and mission, as well as clearly-defined goals and objectives that it wishes to achieve.
- Functional/Departmental Goals and Objectives: Every organization has departmental goals and objectives, which are then linked to the organization's overall goals and objectives.
- Social goal: Every corporation owes society a social corporate duty. They must engage in CSR for the sake of society and human welfare.
There are additional training and development objectives in addition to the four major purposes listed above. This is how it can be summarized:
• Transferring the skill to the workforce in a systematic manner.
• To impart appropriate job-related expertise.
• Develop positive attitudes and change negative attitudes to positive ones.
• Boost productivity and efficiency.
• To make the workplace a safer place to work.
• To make the workplace a better place to work.
• To provide assistance with the performance evaluation.
Types of development and training
The majority of organizations employ a variety of training and
development techniques. It varies from one company to the next at times. Each
training and development strategy has its own set of benefits and drawbacks. A
list of several training methods is provided below.
Employee Development
One of the most
critical functions of Human Resource Management is employee development.
Employee development refers to the development of an individual employee's
abilities as well as the abilities of the organization as a whole. As a result,
employee development includes both individual and organizational growth, as
when employees of the organization develop the organization, the organization
flourishes and employee performance improves (Elena P. 2000). As a result,
there is a clear connection between employee development and performance.
Employees who are more developed are more content with their jobs, are more
committed to their jobs, and their performance improves. When employee
performance improves, the effectiveness of the organization improves as well (Champathes,
2006).
Employee development
programs are established by the majority of firms to aid employee and
organizational success. They spend a lot of money on training and development
because they realize it's an investment with a higher return than the money
they put in.
• Coaching: Emphasis
is placed on the development of certain abilities among employees. The skill
should be acquired in the time allotted.
• Assessment center
and development center: An assessment center is a place where the organization
conducts a series of assessments using various approaches. DC is solely done
for the benefit of the employees' development. Normally, it assesses the
strengths and potentials of employees.
• Developmental
Appraisal: This is a part of the employee performance management and continual
evaluation procedure that is scheduled for the entire year.
• Competitive advantage: Most businesses overlook employee development and are hesitant to invest in training and development. Large and international corporations, on the other hand, value training and development as an investment. That is how they are able to get a competitive advantage.
Conclusion
Employees are the most precious asset in every firm, and their performance determines whether the company succeeds or fails. As a result, most businesses spend a significant amount of money on training and development. Employee knowledge and skills are improved through training and development programs. This will benefit the organization in a variety of ways, particularly in terms of performance management systems. Training and development has numerous benefits for both people and the firm. Companies can cultivate a good competent team using a variety of training and development approaches.
